Interesting sight today.  We went outside.  The kids went to play with the neighbors and I washed the cars.  As the kids were walking up to the neighbors house Danny came running back telling me that  there was a dead rabbit that was eaten by the bears.

I assumed that what he saw was not a dead rabbit eaten by the bears.  However, when got up to the place where Danny told me the dead rabbit was ... sure enough ... there was a dead rabbit.  My first assumption was that was an old carcass that was buried under the snow that has just now been exposed.  But when I looked closer, I could plainly see that it was still kind of bloody and there was a trail of fur leading away from it.  By the way, all that was left were the back legs and paws.  This was a fresh bear kill, I assume.  All taking place about 50 feet from our house.

Oh well, it looks like spring is finally here.  It only got up to around 48 today, but it really felt warm.  The kids and I were outside with shorts and sweatshirt on.  We were actually sweating.  I am not sure why, but the cold temps here do not feel as cold as you would expect, and the warm temps here feel much warmer than you would expect.

Another bear story .... I was outside tonight talking to one of the neighbors and a car drove up the road and stopped next to us.  The person in the car said that we should be careful because there is a big black bear down the road.  Of course, I immediately got in the truck and went down the road to look for it.  No luck.

It is really strange ... we all think it would be really cool to see a bear in our yard, but the last thing we want is to see bear in our yard.

We were invited to a picnic at Kincaid Park which used to be a military base.  The park looks really interesting.  I need to do some research on this place.  Apparently at the peak of the cold war, it housed some of the missiles that were pointed at the Soviet Union in case of nuclear attack.

The picnic was organized as a "thank you" to all of the people that helped put together their big charity auction that took place on April 18th.  Since Rhonda and I helped, we were invited.

An interesting thing that we can learn from the way they do fund raisers here is that they put the leftover food from the charity auction into the freezer immediately following the auction and then use it for the "thank you" picnic.  Great idea!

As we were leaving the picnic, we saw two moose near the parking lot and I took a bunch of pictures. Click here to see the moose pictures.

Had a really full day!

We woke up this morning and Rhonda went to the gym.  The boys and I took our bikes to Kincaid Park.

Anyway, the boys and I rode down a bike path from the park down to the ocean.  It was pretty densely wooded.  We were having a great time.  Andrew asked if we could stop to warm up his hands because this morning, it was about 45 degrees and his hands were getting cold holding onto the handle bars.  We stopped and talked and laughed about our hands being cold.

Just then I looked over into the woods and there was a moose with his fur covered antlers laying in the trees about 30 feet from us.  It was really cool, but a little uneasy too.  We are still getting used to this whole wildlife thing.  We got back on our bikes and rode little way down the bike path and we found the moose's "wife" walking through the brush about 50 feet away from us.  I think these two moose were the same ones that we saw last night at the same park since we were in the same area of the park.

Once we got to the ocean, we headed back up to the park past the moose again.  This time he seemed disturbed by us and got up and started walking away.  No problems though.  Then we spent another hour or so riding through other parts of the park and walking around taking pictures.  Click here to see the pictures in Kincaid Park.

We got home and had lunch with Rhonda, took a little break and then went out exploring again.  This time the whole family got in the truck and we took a ride to Hope, Alaska.  Hope is a quaint little town about an hour or so from our house out on the Kenai Peninsula.  Beautiful scenery on the way out there.

There are 136 full time residents in Hope.  We walked around the town a bit and then had dinner at the Seaview cafe.  Surprisingly good food.

After dinner we walked around Hope a little more and we met a woman who lives in Anchorage now, but she is originally from Wilkes Barre.  We traded stories about our favorite cheese steak places in Philly.  She then said, "Hey is that your truck with the CHZSTK license plate?"  She had seen it earlier when they drove into Hope.  I said that it was and she told us that she had to explain what the license plate meant to the other two people that were with her.

Now the bad part about Hope (I guess all of Alaska from what I hear).  The mosquitoes were OUT OF CONTROL today.  Back in PA, they do not come out until late May/early June and they are primarily only out at night.  And they are not too difficult to deal with unless it is really a still night and you are near water, or in the woods.  Well, I saw my first mosquito up here about two weeks ago.  Yes, that's right, only days after we received two feet of snow, it warmed up to the high 40's which is apparently warm enough for them to breed.  Imagine standing out in a park in the daylight with about a foot of snow on the ground and swatting at mosquitoes.  Well that is what happened two weeks ago.  Today, when the temperature hit 60 for the first time this year, the mosquitoes were literally unbearable in Hope.  We need to figure out something to keep these things away.

We saw a porcupine today!  We were looking out the window down into the ravine next to the house and we saw a porcupine up in a tree.  He wasn't really doing anything.  Just sitting there on a branch.

Had mother's day brunch on the top floor of the Sheraton downtown.  Then we came home and played/walked outside for a couple of hours.  Nice day.

Gorgeous weather this weekend.  Bright sun and mid fifties.  Mid fifties with bright sun feels like mid sixties back home.

Counting the days until we come home at the end of May.

Heard an interesting story today.  Less than a mile away from us a black bear broke into a house and went right to the kitchen.  After tearing the kitchen up a little bit (including pulling the drawers out and tossing them across the kitchen), he opened up the freezer and began gnawing on a frozen chicken.  I am sure he was wondering to himself how humans could eat this stuff.....

His fun was spoiled when the owner of the frozen chicken came home and blasted a bullet through his heart.  I actually sort of feel bad for the bear.  The owner of the house left for a little while and left the main door open with only the screen door closed.  Our part of town is known for having bears walking through our yards.  Why in the world would you leave the house and leave your door open?????
