Had a really full day!
We woke up this morning and Rhonda went to
the gym. The boys and I took our bikes to Kincaid Park.
Anyway, the boys and I rode down a bike path
from the park down to the ocean. It was pretty densely
wooded. We were having a great time. Andrew asked if
we could stop to warm up his hands because this morning, it was
about 45 degrees and his hands were getting cold holding onto
the handle bars. We stopped and talked and laughed about
our hands being cold.
Just then I looked over into the woods and
there was a moose with his fur covered antlers laying in
the trees about 30 feet from us. It was really cool, but a
little uneasy too. We are still getting used to this whole
wildlife thing. We got back on our bikes and rode little
way down the bike path and we found the moose's "wife" walking
through the brush about 50 feet away from us. I think
these two moose were the same ones that we saw last night at the
same park since we were in the same area of the park.
Once we got to the ocean, we headed back up
to the park past the moose again. This time he seemed
disturbed by us and got up and started walking away. No
problems though. Then we spent another hour or so riding
through other parts of the park and walking around taking
pictures. Click here

We got home and had lunch with Rhonda, took a
little break and then went out exploring again. This time
the whole family got in the truck and we took a ride to Hope,
Alaska. Hope is a quaint little town about an hour or so
from our house out on the Kenai Peninsula. Beautiful
scenery on the way out there.
There are 136 full time residents in Hope.
We walked around the town a bit and then had dinner at the
Seaview cafe. Surprisingly good food.
After dinner we walked around Hope a little
more and we met a woman who lives in Anchorage now, but she is
originally from Wilkes Barre. We traded stories about our
favorite cheese steak places in Philly. She then said,
"Hey is that your truck with the CHZSTK license plate?"
She had seen it earlier when they drove into Hope. I said
that it was and she told us that she had to explain what the
license plate meant to the other two people that were with her.
Now the bad part about Hope (I guess all of
Alaska from what I hear). The mosquitoes were OUT OF
CONTROL today. Back in PA, they do not come out until late
May/early June and they are primarily only out at night.
And they are not too difficult to deal with unless it is really
a still night and you are near water, or in the woods.
Well, I saw my first mosquito up here about two weeks ago.
Yes, that's right, only days after we received two feet of snow,
it warmed up to the high 40's which is apparently warm enough
for them to breed. Imagine standing out in a park in the
daylight with about a foot of snow on the ground and swatting at
mosquitoes. Well that is what happened two weeks ago.
Today, when the temperature hit 60 for the first time this year,
the mosquitoes were literally unbearable in Hope. We need
to figure out something to keep these things away.
